“Abstracting Nature” explores the relationships between the seasons experienced in the Midwest and their visual elements, inviting the viewer to engage with a new perspective of the natural environment.

To accompany these works, musician and producer Jon Tschida created an original soundscape that corresponds to the art on view. Inspired by the moods and mentality from each season, Jon pairs specific nature sounds with a variety of beats to influence the viewer’s experience. Give it a listen while you take in the visuals.

In this series, visual artist Reid Doehling turns towards the natural environment for inspiration. Focusing on the relationships of the geometric forms present within nature and combining the abstracted compositions with color schemes influenced by the various seasons experienced in the Midwest. Reid invites the viewer to experience the natural world in a different way.

Lasting Chill

Here, the later months of the winter season are depicted: when the snow is beginning to melt, but the dark days seem to drag on endlessly.

Spring in Bloom

This abstract illustration resembles the growth and renewal that Spring brings to the natural environment.

Picnic in the Park

Geometry inspired by the flowing water of the lake and the organic curves at the beach, as well as the waves of wind rushing through trees, and the rays of sun peeking through the fluffy clouds in the sky; paired with colors picked from elements in nature found during the warmer months make this a perfect reminder of Summer in the Midwest.

Fallen Leaves

What else do you think of during Fall other than the changing colors of the trees before their leaves fall to hide the ground?

Calming Snowfall

Snow-capped trees and the harsh cold of winter are just a couple of the influences that went into the creation of this piece.
